As part of an on-going commitment to a healthier, more sustainable environment, Lampton Leisure, in partnership with Hounslow Council, is set to undergo a green transformation, that will see the future proofing of its services and will support the Council’s mission to deliver greater energy efficiency across the borough.

Thanks to the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS), run by the Department for Business and Industrial Strategy, all the Borough’s leisure centres will be undergoing phased work between now and March 2022.

The building works will include: the installation of Photo voltaic panels that turn daylight into energy, traditional light bulbs replaced with LED lighting and traditional gas-fired boilers will be replaced with modern Air Source Heat Pumps – supplying super-efficient, low-cost energy-saving heating and hot water.

We recognise the importance of our leisure facilities to the local community and will be conducting as much of this upgrade work behind the scenes as possible.  Installation of PV panels will take place while centres are open, however the switch to LED lighting and the installation of Air Source Heat Pumps will require centre closures in order to complete the works. All of these planned upgrades will help reduce carbon emissions as part of the Government pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach the target of net zero emissions by 2050.

Works have been scheduled to be staggered between leisure centres to minimise impact on the borough and current proposed closure dates are as follows:

• Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre & Library 20/11/2021 – 29/11/2021

• Heston Pools & Fitness 11/12/2021- 20/12/2021

Dates for works at Isleworth Leisure Centre, New Chiswick Pool and Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre will be announced at a later date for works in 2022.  Osterley Athletics Track will not require closure during the project works.

We will be contacting all centre members via email to advise of the closures closer to the time of their respective closures. Memberships will be valid across all other Lampton Leisure sites to ensure you can continue to keep active while your centre is closed, alternatively you will be able to opt into a free freeze of your membership if using another centre is not suitable.

Rowland Omamor, Managing Director of Lampton Leisure, said: “This grant scheme will provide really valuable upgrades to our centres ensuring they are fit-for-purpose for many years to come.  We know that the closures will cause some disruption to our members and centre users, and we are committed to keeping this to a minimum.

“We hope local residents will understand the value of these works to help keep our borough as green as possible for years to come.”

Cllr Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: Hounslow leisure centres are about to get a great green upgrade with this scheme, which will give us a huge boost in helping meet our net-zero carbon target.

“The effects of the climate crisis across the globe this year have been hard to ignore, and I am glad that in response to this we are taking swift action to make our Borough as sustainable and resilient for future generations.”

Cllr Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, added: “We all have a duty to do what is best for our environment as we head towards a future that is potentially threatened if we don’t act now on climate emergency.

“Staggering the temporary closure of our leisure centres to do these vital works will pay huge dividends in saving on our carbon footprint and ensure our leisure centres are fit for the future. It’s an opportunity the council has seized to ‘future-proof’ all leisure facilities in Hounslow with funding through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS), which is run by the Department for Business and Industrial Strategy”
